Policy for Dispensing and Storage of Children’s Medication

During the three hours of attendance (9 am – 12 pm), only life-threatening medications will be stored at the preschool.  This may include epi-pens, Benadryl with a physician’s prescription, and asthma inhalers.

Medications will be administered to a child only upon written authorization of the parents/caregivers.  The medication must be in its original container with the child’s name, directions for use, prescribing physician’s name, medication name, strength of medication, prescription number, date filled, expiration date, and name of pharmacy.  Over the counter medications must be accompanied by a physician’s prescription attached.

Parents/caregivers are encouraged to administer all other medications prior to bringing their child to class.

The following procedures are administered:

• Parents/caregivers bring medication in a Ziploc baggie labeled with child’s name and teacher/class.
• Parents/caregivers complete licensing form #9221 “Parent Consent for Administration of Medications and Medication Chart”.
• Parents/caregivers complete a signed, descriptive statement of their child’s condition, list of allergies and symptoms, and the requested treatment.
• Medications are kept in a locked cabinet in the preschool office.
• An allergy/medications list for the preschool is given to each child care room, letting the child care providers know of all children’s allergies/medications.
• Medications may be administered by the child care provider or office staff.
• All medications will be returned to the parents/caregiver at the end of the child’s enrollment/end of school year.
